I grew up in Brussels and spent most of my adult life in London before recently moving to my family’s ancestral city in the French Alps (best decision I ever made!). • 🎨 I am a painter and illustrator, and sell some of my work on Etsy (link in bio). May is ME/CFS (Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic f May is ME/CFS (Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome)awareness month. • Disabling, devastating, debilitating: ME is all-encompassing. • Among others, patients experience a devastating fatigue that is not improved by rest. A defining feature of ME is PEM (post-exertional malaise): the worsening of all or some of their symptoms following even minor mental/cognitive/physical exertion (taking a shower, seeing a friend, reading). • ME derails your life regardless of severity, but the form I’m intimately familiar is its severe form. I am the full-time carer for my best friend Chloé, who has been bedridden for seven months. • In November, On the day she turned 27, we ate birthday pizza in silence, side by side on her bed. At her best, we can sit together and chat for sometimes more than an hour. She can eat and write and sometimes even do philosophy (her job & passion). At her worst, she can barely speak to me and doesn’t tolerate sound , nor touch, nor light. She lays in her bed, painfully awake but completely depleted. Trapped in her own body. She needs round the clock practical care and wholehearted, loving mental support. • Her ME is a consequence of covid (ME is often post viral, if more traditionally a result of EBV), her immunity is compromised. We shield aggressively and live in our little covid safe bubble.
